I like horror movies to be either a) full of ghosties or other supernaturalness or b) campy. Shelly and I saw Wolf Creek this afternoon and I actually left the theatre with about 20 minutes left in the film. I think this is a case of viewers being so desensitized to gore on the screen that there is not a lot of places left to go in the genre. Or at least this director thought so; the movie had absolutely zero entertainment value and just made me sad and sickened.

Roger Ebert said it best, I think:
“There is a line and this movie crosses it. I don’t know where the line is, but it’s way north of Wolf Creek.”
Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

If you want to see a spooky movie this season, go rent The Others. If you want to see something violent (but hysterical and awesome) rent The Devil’s Rejects. If you want something campy, you can’t go wrong with House of Wax. But don’t go see this one, honestly.

“Darkness” (I think that’s what it was called; it starred Anna Paquin) was the same way. It also didn’t help that there was no conclusion and the theatre didn’t turn out the lights when the movie started.

Sorry I left you sitting out there at the end, I just had to see how it was going to turn out. At least I got some closure since the one character got away.

I totally agree though that Wolf Creek is NOT a spooky movie and NOT a horror movie–just plain violence. I watch a lot of ulra-violent movies, most of them Japanese Yakuza films, but Wolf Creek was HARSH–even for me!

I’m hoping that film ‘Hostel’, of which I know nothing about except its supposed scariness, doesn’t turn out the same way.

Yeah I hate this breed of movies. I love supernatural horror and even really violent movies, as long as they’re not based on emotional cruelty and torture. It’s not a taboo I need to see broken.
