Interview & THANK YOU

Thanks so much for your comments, non-gender specific fellas. It was great to come home to the good wishin’. The interview went well, I think. I got along with the ladies, made them laugh, laughed with them, came off as not 100% ridiculous, etc.

They’re going to see some more people this week and next (I was first, which can be both good and bad) and make a decision at the end of next week. Pins and needles, people!

*Crosses all digits* I really hope this works out for you. It would seem like a dream come true! And of course that means that there is hope for the rest of us.

I am sending happy thoughts your way for the next week. Well, all of the rest of the time too, but you know what I mean.

Jen, SOS! I have a couple of interviews coming up, both for public libraries. Can you tell me about the questions you got during your interview?

I got a lot of standards such as:

      1) tell us about a difficult experience with a patron/an angry patron and how you fixed it

      2) various “what if” scenarios:
      - rowdy teenagers
      - another angry patron one
      - someone wanting to check out some scandalous (that was a big “duh” one)

      3) garden variety RA questions, i.e. “I like Tom Clancy, what else should I read?”

      4) 2 or 3 reference query role playing scenes

      5) what about your experience and education have prepared you for this job?

      6) what do you look for in a manager (this was an unexpected one)

      7) why do you want to work at this particular library?

and a lot more I can’t seem to remember because I know there were 21 questions in total…

In regards to the last topic, I asked quite a few questions, some of which were:

      1. What would my typical day be like? How many hours at the desk, what would be my projects/responsibilities off desk, etc.

      2. How do you feel about the internet use policy at this library? Do you have any ethical problems with it? (they had filters) – this was fair game since they had asked me how I felt about them earlier in the interview and I wanted to know how/why the filtering came about since it was very recently implimented

      3. What is the reference philosophy at this library?

      4. What is the process for reference queries – are there guidelines for how long an interview should last or how long the desk should/can work on something?

I think that’s mostly it – just make sure you practice your answers to the most common questions and that you include all you mean to say every time you practice – it’s very easy to leave out something important when you’re nervous!
