On Friday night, Sky, Kathy and I caught the world premiere of a great little documentary called Girls Rock!
The movie documents a week spent by a group of girls at the Portland area based Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls summer camp session. The girls are awesome, kickass, adorable, pains in the neck and humbling. We were so lucky to get in — we were standing in the rush line and just happened to be near the front enough that we could snag some of the last available seats. After the showing some of the girls from the movie came up and answered some audience questions. It was so neat to see how they had changed in stature and attitude since filming about a year or so ago.
They’ve got a great website that’s very community driven, inspired by the movie and expanded upon by what looks like hundreds of contributors: http://www.girlsrockmovie.com
This was great timing for me – I was beginning to feel a little worn out with work, and this revived my interest in youth development. I cried more than once during the movie – it was just so amazing to see those girls gaining faith in themselves as the days went by and they learned they could accomplish things they’d never imagined.
If their distribution deal works out as planned, Girls Rock! should be out in theaters in 2008. I hope tons of people go see it and spread the word about fantastic youth programs.
