Yesterday was awesome. First of all, Sky let me sleep in, even though I (allegedly) tried to smother him with a pillow when he tried to wake me up by singing “Blue Hawaii” in my right ear.
Once I was awake, we ate breakfast and read the paper. After that we put on our working clothes and big protective gloves and we piled all of our trash into the back of the pickup truck. There was a bunch of stuff left over from the previous renters (old fridge, etc.) and debris from our wall removal projects just piled up in our backyard. It felt good to make that space clean, but you know what felt even better? GOING TO THE DUMP!
I’ve never been to a dump, and the whole ride over I was singing parts of “Alice’s Restaurant” with Sky chiming in for the good parts (“twenty seven eight-by-ten color glossy photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was”). I was so excited. I just couldn’t hide it. I was about to lose control, etc. First we unloaded our fridge, and left it among the sad little line of abandoned large appliances. Sky grabbed a bunch of cripser drawers and decided he was going to make some shelves out of them. I saw an old 1940s fridge with a big block of ice in the freezer, with something glinting within the ice. I couldn’t handle the mystery so Sky helped me break the block apart and inside I found a treasure! An old aluminum ice cube tray with the nifty release handle!

After the fridge fun, we drove to the main dump area. It was a big inside parking lot with a large drop off and big empty space for the all of the garbage. I saw couches, beds, garbage, rugs, parts of wood furniture, you name it, all in that big pile. There was a guy in a tractor that kept pushing the garbage up against the wall as people threw their stuff in. The people next to us were heaving a huge couch over the edge. We emptied our load and had fun throwing things in strange ways. The last thing we threw in was this bright blue old kitty bed – then we tried to see how long we could keep track of it in the pile before it dissappeared (about 4 minutes).
After the dump we went to ReStore which was evil in a really good way. We spent a few hours looking over doors, bathtubs, doorknobs, and light fixtures. In the end we bought a door and a set of doorknobs, but I’m sure we’ll be back for more soon. They had nice cats lazying around and we had fun talking with the people who worked there. Once we made it out the door we realized we were hungry enough to eat each other’s ears so we went and had some burger-y type food across the street. We people watched and had a good lunch. We went home to watch Little Children (good in parts, dissappointing overall) and then finished building our shelves. We spent the rest of the evening putting books away and it looks fannnntastic.
It was a busy day off, but a good one. I’m always happy to putz around doing errands with Sky because we have so much fun together. Yay for Sundays.
