We accept you! One of us! One of us!

Halloween rolled around, and we had no real plans. I’ve been taking medication for a kidney snafu that’s made me pretty loopy and sleepy, so I didn’t feel like whooping it up. Let’s face it, when you’re taking Vicodin and muscle relaxers daily, pretty much everything feels like whooping it up. Sitting at a reference desk? As the blind dude would say “Hoo Ahh!” Writing a monthly report? Made my brain feel kind of tingly. Hell, putting on socks in the morning felt like a small crawl up Everest.

So back to Halloween and saying I wasn’t up for much.

We looked at our options, and dismissed them one at a time. Goth Cabaret? Eh. Party #1? Too loud. Party #2? Only knew two people. We decided (as we often, often do) to see a movie, and decided on Freaks at SIFF. Sky has never seen Freaks. I couldn’t believe this was true, and at the same time I felt a profound pride in the fact that I would be the brilliant soul who introduced him to this fine film. It was great on a large screen, and I enjoyed every moment.

The moment I did not enjoy is when a lady stood up at the end of the credits and yelled out “Who else is offended that this is being played on Halloween?!” There was a totally awkward and long pause wherein no one responded. She repeated her question and gave some accusing looks. I had no idea what sort of answer this lady wanted. I wasn’t sure I could even follow her logic, and yet I didn’t feel like engaging in a conversation with her. Call me cranky, but I don’t feel like doing that when I don’t have to – at work I usually must. We discussed this on the walk to the car and we decided that she didn’t think the freaks ought to be seen as scary, and thus they shouldn’t be related to Halloween. What didn’t jive is the fact that at no point did SIFF call this a HALLOWEEN SPECIAL SCARY MOVIE or bill it in conjunction with Halloween.

We wanted to see Rosemary’s Baby after watching Freaks because it was playing @ SIFF next week and Sky hadn’t seen that one, either. They didn’t have it at the video store, but they DID have 48 Days Later. We watched that instead. Sky was freaked out and nerve-wrecked the entire time – I guess that’s why he doesn’t watch scary movies.
