I haven’t posted much about our new place, yet. It’s pretty fantastic, and the more we unpack and get settled, the better it gets. The main draw for us was the 2nd bedroom, so we could do crafting and projects without worrying about kitty cats getting into the messes. We’ve colonized most of our space, cleaned out the grody basement (okay, so Sky did that part), and organized the kitchen and bathroom. What’s left is the putting up of all of the pretty things which are waiting patiently in boxes wrapped in bubble wrap and newsprint.
We’ve got lots of pretty little odds and ends to put up – it’s my favorite part of moving! Here’s Lola posing with one of our newest finds: elk horns from northern Oregon. We found them in a little junk shop, and at first they squicked me out quite a bit, but then I read the note from the sellers: they’d found them while hiking, shed by an elk the season before. Something about them being so smooth and structural – they’ve grown on me (har, har).
We bought an old typewriter for $1.25 @ Goodwill Bins on Sunday, a Skywriter. It works just fine and I think we’ll use it for our wedding zines. We need to get cracking on our first issue, which will be the sort of “Save the Date”/Introduction one. I’m starting to get motivated/excited about making these. I think we’ll use clippings from newspapers from the days we were born (from either the Seattle Times Historical or New York Times Historical databases). Plus baby pictures. And cat pictures. Always cat pictures.
The new kitchen is a super great cooking kitchen – lots of counter space and it’s well laid out. I’ve been cooking and baking up a storm the last week. Delicious stuff we’ve made recently:
I just got a 1987 copy of the The Greens Cook Book from Katie — I’ve used this book to cook before but never had my own copy. It was something I looked for in used bookstores but could never seem to find, so I’m pretty excited to own a copy! Other cookbooks I’ve been using a lot are Super Natural Cooking by Heidi Swanson (who has a great blog, 101 Cookbooks, if you don’t already read it), and the Tartine cookbook.
We haven’t taken many photos of the new place yet — every time we think to do so it’s dark and gloomy out already. Damn you, Seattle Winter. I’ll never get used to you. Instead, here is an animated GIF I made of the cats jumping in boxes while Sky tried to pack some records a few weeks ago!
